Grooming at Tullivers
After hearing many sad and unfortunate stories from our customers regarding negative grooming experiences their dogs have endured, we realized there was a serious need for a more humane and gentle grooming experience for our brave little four-legged friends. So, Tullivers set out to create a grooming facility that would be "kinder and gentler" to our pets, and since opening the Grooming Salon at our Albuquerque location in August of 2009, it has been received very positively and with much demand.
Our grooming space is "intimate" and viewable by the customer. At no time are there more than two groomers working together, and only a small number of dogs present at the same time. We will never operate an "assembly line" type of facility, as this would be counter to our desire to offer a calm and low-stress environment.
We do not use the standard large and loud cage dryers. These should be outlawed! Imagine the stress this creates for any animal (or any being, for that matter), who has to be subjected to sitting in the equivalent of a wind tunnel for an extended period of time, and not being able to control the amount of heat it is being subjected to. Tullivers uses small fans that you or I would use at home to place against the cages. These fans are much quieter and have no heat settings, so no risk of burn to your pet. Our groomers also are very proficient at using special hand dryers to do the bulk of the drying on most small dogs.
We hired only the most capable and conscientious groomers, who first and foremost, have love, respect and consideration for animals above all else. Then we implemented our own unique grooming policies and procedures, which basically revolves around the necessity for the dog's comfort, safety, and well-being. Here are some things you will NEVER see being done to a dog being groomed at Tullivers:
He/she will not be hidden from your view during the bathing or grooming process.
He/she will not be restrained in a manner that could cause physical harm during the grooming process. If the groomer is having difficulty in scissoring a specific area on a dog, she will be assisted by another staff member to hold and soothe the dog while she completes her cutting.
Muzzles are always used as a last resort. However, we understand the need to protect both the animal AND groomer during nail clippings or other aspects of the groom that may be stressful to the dog.
If your dog exhibits severe anxiety during the groom, we will stop the process and give your dog a break (or as many breaks as it takes) to help minimize their discomfort. We will let them roam free in the grooming room and will provide them with some water if they want it. And, of course, you'll usually hear a lot of soothing "baby talk" by the groomer to help your pet return to a point of stability wherein the groom can be resumed.
TWO REQUESTS OF YOU, THE CLIENT (AKA GUARDIAN OF FOUR-LEGGED CLIENT):
First, we ask that you be available by phone while your pet is being groomed at Tullivers. We may need to call you to ask a question regarding your dog's physical condition or behavior while he or she is visiting us, and if we cannot reach you, the groom may have to be stopped. Since we groom many dogs who are elderly or have chronic physical conditions and/or behavioral concerns, the occasion does arise when we need to speak to you before proceeding further with the groom. Our inability to communicate with you compromises our ability to move forward in a safe and comfortable manner. It is also very important that we be able to reach you personally when the groom is complete, not an answering machine or voice message.
Second, in order to ensure that our grooming salon maintains its "intimate, quiet, and low stress environment," it is imperative that every dog guardian pick up their dog(s) AS SOON AS THE GROOM IS COMPLETED. We will call you when your dog is ready, at which time you should immediately come to pick up your dog. While most clients honor this policy, there have been more recent instances where dogs are not picked up for up to 2 hours past the groom completion. In order to curtail this tardiness, we have implemented a late fee for all pets who are not picked up within half an hour of groom completion, and we will not invite your animal for a return groom.
Our grooming facility is not for everyone. It is for those who appreciate the calm, gentle, and conscientious environment that caters first and foremost to the animals comfort and safety. We ask that you please respect our policies so that all dogs who come to our salon for grooming receive the positive experience they are expecting. If you cannot be available by phone at all times, or cannot pick up your dog on time, please seek another grooming facility who does not enforce these policies.
